BELOIT (WREX) — The Beloit Police Department has released the name of the man shot and killed in a weekend shooting, and their providing more details in to what happened.

Police say 28-year-old James Tomten was shot and killed around 12:20 p.m. Saturday in the 800 block of Vine Street. Police say he was sitting in the driver’s side of a beige Cadillac Escalade when it happened. The SUV was running and came to a stop in a nearby snowbank. Police say hours later neighbors called them because the SUV had been sitting there for so long.

Police say they are investigating all circumstances the shooting occurred under, but they do believe the suspect and the victim knew each other.

“This wasn’t somebody just going around the city shooting,” said Capt. Thomas Stigler.

Police say the victim was seen on surveillance video of a business on Beloit’s east side earlier that day. They are looking for the person who was with Tomten at that time before the shooting, and naming him a person of interest.

Police have also released a photo of the SUV the victim was found in.

Anyone with information on the murder should call Beloit PD at 608-364-6803.
