ROCKFORD (WREX) — Students from Boylan Catholic High School are getting the chance to show students from a different country what a day of school in the United States is like.
This week, Boylan students welcomed 28 9th grade students from its Chinese sister school in Wenling, China. Each Chinese student was paired with a student ambassador from Boylan’s Mandarin Chinese language program.
“I just think it’s cool that I get to see how they interact with us even though there is a language barrier,” said Elaina Hills, a sophomore at Boylan. “We can still get concepts across and learn about each other.”
They spent the day shadowing classes and taking part in school activities and events.
“I think the Sister School Program is really amazing because it helps our students understand that people from different parts of the world think differently,” said Tracy Cannell, the Mandarin Chinese teacher at Boylan.
The students from China will also spend the weekend exploring Rockford and will stay with the Boylan students until next Tuesday.
