East senior wrestler Aydin Guttridge is our newest 13 WREX Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Rock Valley College.
Guttridge is one of the top-ranked heavyweights in the state of Illinois, and the Wisconsin commit heads into his last high school postseason fresh off a NIC-10 conference championship won this past weekend in the E-Rabs gym.
“I’m really confident, I think more confident than I’ve ever been in a postseason,” Guttridge said.
“Just worked on my gas tank a little more, getting into my offense” Guttridge added, on what’s been the difference as an E-Rabs senior this year. “Normally I wait for the other guy to shoot, but if I get to my offense, I’ll win more matches. That’s something I changed.”
Valuable experience has been critical too, especially against Hononegah heavyweight legend and Iowa wrestler Tony Cassioppi.
“He pushed me, and helped me. He was my practice partner at Fargo, we went every single go,” Guttridge said.
Now the IHSA brackets are next, as Guttridge looks to put his stamp on an already decorated East High career.
“Make sure you finish the mission, that’s the goal, get down to state and win it…I can get all happy after a tournament…but when it’s grind time, you get back to the mindset that this is my time.”
