ROCKFORD (WREX) — The weather will be dangerously cold this week and one of Rockford’s most vulnerable populations is at risk: the homeless.
A Rockford organization is trying to collect donations ahead of the arctic freeze.
Miss Carly’s provides food, shelter and supplies for Rockford’s homeless. She said she’s in desperate need of supplies ahead of the cold coming to Rockford.
“We feed people a little extra when it’s cold because the people that are out on the streets and in the elements they burn calories just staying still trying to stay warm,” Carly Rice said. “So we do heftier portions, a little bit more carbs, just book on the calories because they spend them.”
Miss Carly’s is taking donations. The organization’s biggest needs are hand warmers, socks, bottled water, meats for meals and snacks.
“While we’re feeding a meal here in the winter it’s hard for people to get from point A to point B in the extreme temperatures so we try to give them something for the road too like a granola bar.”
You can drop off donations at Miss Carly’s at 1125 5th Avenue, Rockford from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays. CLICK HERE to donate through PayPal. You can also donate on Venmo at @Carly-Rice-2.
