Dixon, Illinois (WREX) — May 16th 2018 is a day that will never be forgotten in Dixon, Illinois.
“At that time we heard shots. My assistant principal yelled ‘we have a shooter get out’. I yelled at the seniors to get out.” said Mike Grady, the Principal at Dixon High School.
A former Dixon High School student is accused of showing up on campus with a gun, and attempting a school shooting.
“Basically what I can tell you right now, due to the active investigation, is this was a student enrolled with us and was scheduled to graduate with the rest of us.” said Margo Empen the Superintendent of the Dixon School District.
Thankfully, he never got the chance. It’s all because of the school’s resource officer, Mark Dallas.
“Something pushed me down there that day. So, I really truly believe I was meant to be down there for that purpose.” said Dallas.
Officer Dallas is a 25 year veteran of the police force, a graduate of Dixon High School and a father, whose son was in the gym that fateful day.
“In stressful situations, you fall back on your training. I went instantly into my training. After the fact, that’s when dad mode came out. Once I was secure, the suspect was secure. I was in an ambulance, and all I wanted to do was find out about my own kids.” said Dallas.
However, it wasn’t just his family Dallas was thinking of in those critical moments.
“I was dad to 182 kids in the gym that day.” said Dallas.
Since that day 8 months ago, Officer Dallas has received countless awards and recognitions.
“I’ve met the President of the United States down in Florida. I met Blake Shelton, got to meet him, which was really cool, I’m a fan there, there’s several others. Congressman Kinzinger, he’s been tremendous throughout this whole deal, he contacts me frequently.” said Dallas.”The Governor made a proclamation of Mark Dallas Day, May 30th, that was kind of cool, never had something like that. ”
He’s taking all those accolades with stride.
“I don’t consider myself a hero, I just consider myself a police officer.” said Dallas.
Officer Mark Dallas, inspiring not just the 815, but the nation.
“Because of his heroic actions, countless lives were saved. We are forever indebted to him for his service and his bravery.” said Steve Howell, the Dixon Police Chief.
