ROCKFORD (WREX) – CBD oil is growing in popularity as a treatment for pain, anxiety, depression, and even seizures or epilepsy.
“There has been a significant increase in sales from the beginning of January 2017 until now,” Sami Abuhamoud said, the manager at Smoke King in Machesney Park.
Tom Carey, the Director of Pharmacy at SwedishAmerican, said science shows it can treat seizures in children, as well as other movement disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease, Restless Leg Syndrome, Central Tremor, and ticks.
He said there is less research on CBD oil’s effects on pain, anxiety and depression, but there are many people who use it for those purposes.
CBD oil comes from marijuana, however it does not contain THC, which is the chemical in marijuana that provides a “buzz” or “high.”
“CBD oil often gets lumped with marijuana or medial marijuana, when in actuality its really quite different,” Care said. “We might think about marijuana as something that gives us a high or a buzz and actually increases our appetite, CBD oil actually comes from a chemical called cannabidiol, which can have just the opposite effects.”
CBD is legal to buy and use in all 50 states, but there are certain places to buy the oil that might provide better results.
Carey said since CBD is not regulated by FDA, there is a possibility that trace amounts of THC could be present in store-bought CBD, which can have opposite effects on people with seizures.
“Depending on how it’s made, if it contains trace amounts of THC, marijuana actually increases a seizure patient’s risk,” he said.
For that reason, Carey said if you do plan on using CBD for seizures or more severe health reasons, you should consider using pharmaceutical-grade CBD, which is not available in stores.
He also said that the CBD that is sold is stores comes from industrial hemp, rather than from marijuana plants, so it may not have as many active ingredients as medical-grade CBD oil.
However, he said if you want to try using CBD oil for anxiety or pain, there’s really no risks other than it simply not working.
And, Abuhamoud said he has had a lot of customers who have had great success using CBD for pain.
“I have a lot of older people who have come in with chronic pain, used it for two or three weeks and have came back with a wild result, amazing results, a significant decrease in chronic pain,” Abuhamoud said.
He said it is better to buy CBD oil at smoke shops and health markets, rather than a place like a gas station or tanning salon, because those versions may contain fillers or may not work as well.
