More than 30,000 students apply for Empower Illinois tax credit scholarships

ROCKFORD (WREX) – A day after launching, tens of thousands of Illinois students are vying for private school scholarships.

Part one of the application for the Empower Illinois tax credit scholarships launched Tuesday night at 7 p.m. and Empower Illinois says applications were submitted for at least more than 30,000 students. The state’s taxpayer-funded private school scholarship is in its second year, but Governor JB Pritzker has said he would seek to end the program. A move some leaders at local private schools say they hope doesn’t happen.

“The old governor was very supportive of this program,” said Rockford Lutheran School Executive Director Don Gillingham. “In the campaign, the new governor, Governor Pritzker, was not as supportive. But I’m feeling very comfortable because our local representatives and senators have told us this is a five-year program and they see it continuing as a five-year program.”

The second step of the application begins on Friday.
