ROCKFORD (WREX) – An exhibit featuring a familiar face has made Rockford the spot for its debut in the state of Illinois.

The Thomas and Friends “Explore the Rails” display opened at the Discovery Center last Friday, Jan. 12.

This is the first time the 1,500 square foot exhibit is coming to Illinois.

Children get to climb into Thomas’ cab, explore the engine’s inner workings and help Thomas in a variety of challenges. The exhibit also offers children to work with Percy, Victor, and others, fix movable parts, flip switches, load luggage and freight and fill tanks with water.

It features several different stations helping kids learn things like math, spacial awareness and teamwork.

The Discovery Center says its something that brings as much excitement in the parents as their kids.

“Lots of parents grew up either reading the Thomas books or watching the cartoons. A lot of little ones have the Thomas engine at home. This is just a perfect thing that kind of crosses generations and it’s something that really the parents and the kids can be involved with together,” said Discovery Center Director of Marketing Ann Marie Walker.

The exhibit will be at the Discovery Center through May 12.

Admission for adults is $11 and $1 for children.
