New scam asks people to give information on loved ones

ROCKFORD (WREX) — There’s a new phone scam out there that’s not trying to get your money, but information on your loved ones.

The Rockford Better Business Bureau is investigating this. It’s a little different than your typical phone scam: In it, the caller isn’t asking for financial information. Scammers are actually asking for information on a loved one, saying if it is not given then the relative would face some sort of punishment.

The BBB says this opens the potential for identity theft for those who fall for the phony call.

If anyone receives this phone call and think it is a scam, they’re asked to contact the police or the BBB at 815-963-2222.
