Barber Colman TIF District approval nears final hurdle

ROCKFORD (WREX) – A plan to create a Tax Increment Financing District near the Barber Colman project is one step closer to reality.

The TIF District would last 23 years and allows property tax dollars to go toward its redevelopment. This TIF would be in addition to an existing one that expires in 2023.

The former Barber Colman site is being redeveloped in to a manufacturing training center. It passed in committee Monday night. The full council votes next week on whether to approve the TIF District.

Also at City Council, the Rockford Fire Department may add to its fire-vehicle repair shop duties.

The department is looking for a fourth mechanic to offer the shop’s services to other agencies in Winnebago County. Rockford fire says the extra income would cover the additional mechanic’s costs and provide an additional $73,000 for the city.

The Rockford Fire Department has national certification for emergency vehicle repair. Aldermen passed this item in committee. It must now pass the full council.
