UPDATE: Suspect dies after workplace shooting in Middleton

UPDATE (WKOW) — An employee of a Middleton software company opened fire today on his coworkers, injuring four before he was shot by police. He later died at a Madison hospital.

The shooter, who has not yet been identified, used a semi-automatic handgun and had additional magazines, Middleton Police Chief Charles Foulke said in a news conference Wednesday afternoon. He described the gunman as being “heavily armed.”

He died at UW Hospital, Foulkes said.

The shooter lived int he city of Madison, and had not had any contact with police prior to this incident.

Three of the victims were seriously injured, one received a gunshot injury to the arm, Foulke said.

Foulke said about 10 Middleton police officers and Dane County Sheriff’s deputies responded initially, and two Middleton officers and two Dane County deputies engaged the shooter.

Middleton police and the FBI have offered victim-witness counseling services to witnesses.

UPDATE (WKOW) — Businesses located near the shooting scene are expected to remain closed for the next 24-48 hours while investigators from the Department of Criminal Investigation, FBI and ATF continue their investigation into this incident.

Family reunification is taking place at the Marriott Hotel located at 1313 John Q Hammons Dr in the City of Middleton.

Middleton police will hold a news conference at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

UPDATE (WKOW) — One victim from the Middleton shooting had been transported to St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment. They were released Wednesday afternoon, according to a spokesperson.

UPDATE (WKOW) — A Middleton City official confirms the suspect in the WTS Paradigm shooting has died after being shot by police.

UPDATE (WKOW) — Middleton’s police chief says the suspect in the shooting was shot by police officers and is in the hospital.

Chief Charles Foulke says three other people were shot. All three were taken to the hospital for gunshot wounds.

Foulke says the call came in around 10:30 a.m. of an active shooter at WTS Paradigm at 1850 Deming Way. He says the Paradigm building has been cleared by officers and has been declared safe.

He also says all other lockdowns have been lited.

Foulke says there are no other suspects in the shooting.

People who evacuated from the area of the shooting can meet up with their families at the Madison Marriott West.

UPDATE (WKOW) — UW Hospital tells 27 News one of its four patients is in critical condition and two patients are in serious condition.

Officials did not know the condition of the fourth patient.

UPDATE (WKOW) — The Associated Press reports the victims of the shooting at a Middleton Software company are expected to survive.

The shooting was reported around 10 a.m. at WTS Paradigm.

AP reports City Administrator Mike Davis also said the suspect was injured during the shooting. Their conditions weren’t immediately known.

UPDATE (WKOW) — St. Mary’s Hospital tells 27 News it has received one victim from a shooting at a software company in Middleton. The hospital confirms that person is expected to survive.

An additional four victims are being treated at University Hospital.

27 News is working to find out more about any other victims as well as the shooter’s condition.

UPDATE (WKOW) — RED Development, LLC, the real estate company who owns Greenway Station confirms to 27 News that the mall is currently on lockdown.

UPDATE (WKOW) — 27 News has received a staff email from the Madison School District telling all staff members the shooter has been taken into custody.

“Good morning All MMSD Staff…

Some of you may be aware through social media that the Middleton Police Department in the past hour has responded to an Active Shooter situation in the 1800 block of Deming Way.  This building is a private business software company.

I have confirmed with the Madison Police Department that the shooter has been taken into custody.  Police are still searching this particular building for any other threats.

AT THIS TIME THERE IS NO THREAT TO ANY MMSD BUILDING.

IT IS NOT NECESSARY FOR ANY MMSD BUILDING TO BE IN A CODE RED LOCK DOWN SITUATION AS THERE IS NO KNOWN IMMINENT THREAT AT THIS TIME.

There is an MMSD All Principals meeting occurring at Edgewood College on Deming Way, but all of our staff are safe and secure.  They are staying at their site at this time given the activity and emergency response taking place about a mile from their location.

We will provide further updates from Central Office as necessary.”

UPDATE (WKOW) — Middleton-Cross Plains School District Communications Director Perrie Hibner tells 27 News all schools in the district have been given the ‘all clear’ from Middleton Police.

Hibner tells WKOW police said the threat is over.

Schools in the district are no longer on lockdown.

UPDATE (WKOW) — University Hospital confirms to 27 News it has received 4 victims in the Middleton shooting. The IT building on Deming Way remains on lockdown. All other UW Health sites and clinics are open.

UPDATE (WKOW) — The Middleton-Cross Plains School District tells 27 News all of the schools in the district are currently on lockdown.

Communications Director Perrie Hibner says all buildings will be secure for the next hour. No one will be allowed in or out

There will not be any bus pickups are drop-offs and 4-k classes are canceled.

Hibner says every parent in the district should have received a phone call explaining the situation.

MIDDLETON (WKOW) — Police are responding to a reported active shooting situation in a building on Deming Way.

The Middlelton Police department sent a phone message to residents about an active shooter.

“There is an active shooter in the area please lock all doors, stay inside and shelter in place. Police officers are on scene at this time,” the recording said.

The husband of an employee of Esker, Inc. said that the reported shooting did not happen in that building. Employees there currently are sheltering in place.

Law enforcement are staging outside of a company called WTS Paradigm, a software company that shares an address with Esker at 1850 Deming Way.
