Rockford native is named ‘Chicagoan of the Year’

CHICAGO (WREX) — A Rockford native is named a “Chicagoan of the Year” by the Chicago Tribune.

Bing Liu is a “Chicagoan of the Year in the Arts for 2018.”

Liu directed “Minding the Gap,” which is a documentary set in Rockford. The film has won several awards and was just named on the shortlist for an Oscar nomination.

The Tribune article says, “Whatever happens with the Oscars, the Chicago resident has had a remarkable year with his remarkable nonfiction hybrid. If you haven’t seen it, see it.”

Liu graduated from Guilford High School and went to Rock Valley College.

“Minding the Gap” is streaming on Hulu now.
