ILLINOIS (WREX)- More people are packing up and leaving the state, according to new numbers released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Illinois’ population has fallen for the fifth straight year. The state lost an estimated 45,100 people in 2018. In 2017, around 33,700 people left.

That means more than 11,000 more people left the state in 2018 than in 2017. However, Illinois remains the sixth largest state in the U.S.

Last year Pennsylvania took Illinois’ spot as the fifth largest state, and it could fall again. Ohio is fewer than a million residents away from overtaking Illinois.

Illinois suffered the second biggest population loss of any state this year, second behind New York.

Illinois is the only state in the Midwest that saw a population loss.
