WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WREX)- Deputies with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department filled shopping carts with kids from the Rockford area for annual shop with a cop event.

Excitement was flowing throughout the aisles of Meijer on Saturday as Winnebago County Sheriff’s Deputies paired up with local kids and filled their carts with toys.

“It’s a toy for them, but it’s a season of giving for us,” Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant, Pete DalPra said.

The annual shop with a cop event brought in around 50 kids who got a chance to take a personalized shopping trip with a deputy to pick out some Christmas gifts. Each kid got to enjoy their time with the officer and check a few items off their Christmas list.

It’s an event that officer say means a lot to the kids but it’s able to leave a lasting impact on them.

“It’s not very often that you get a five or six year old kid, that really appreciates you, even a 10 year old, that really appreciates what the police are doing for them. It means for us than it does to them,” DalPra said.

More shopping activities will continue tomorrow with firefighters from the Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department.
