Beautiful weekend weather for holiday shopping

ROCKFORD (WREX) – With only three weekends to go before Christmas, the shopping weather couldn’t be better.

As folks across the Southern Great Plains and Southeast brace for their first big taste of winter weather, the Stateline will dodge a wintry bullet.  High pressure is settling into the region and this is keeping quiet weather around.  Plenty of sunshine is in the forecast today into the weekend.  There are only three weekends left before Christmas, so if you have any shopping to do, this weekend is going to be a perfect weekend for it.

Normally when the weekend features wall-to-wall sunshine, it’s a hard sell to convince people to stay indoors shopping.  Despite plenty of sunny skies, temperatures this weekend with an Arctic high parked on top of us, are going to remain on the chilly side.  Staying indoors with mall concession coffee or hot chocolate sound like a perfect way to handle the cold weekend ahead.

Winter storm watches are already in effect from the Texas Panhandle all the way to western North Carolina.  By midday today, that low pressure will be located across the Southern U.S. on its way toward the Southeast.  The cold front that is responsible for our cold weekend will push far enough southeast to allow for wintry weather in places that wouldn’t ordinarily see a December snowstorm.  Snow and ice totals could be quite impressive, especially along the Appalachians.

Back in the Stateline, temperatures do slowly rebound by Sunday into the 30’s.  By the middle of next week, temperatures could be closer to average (mid-to-upper-30’s).  In the meantime, enjoy the cold weather.  Get that holiday gift list knocked out (or started, if you’re like me) since Christmas will be here before you know it.
