JANESVILLE (WREX) — The Janesville Police Department is warning the community of a scam involving Social Security.

Police say the scam involves individuals posing as Social Security employees calling and asking for personal information, such as as your name, bank account information and Social Security number.

The caller says they need the information to issue additional funds or say they need the information because it was lost due to a computer glitch.

Social Security says they will not send an email asking for personal or private information. They say if someone claims they are from Social Security, don’t respond to the message, but call their office to see if information is really needed. The Social Security office number is 1-800-772-1213.
