Rockford fire officials investigate small gas explosion

ROCKFORD (WREX) — The Rockford Fire Department is investigating whether a fire at a home in Rockford started as a result of a gas explosion.

Crews responded to the 500 block of S. 5th Street around 6:30 p.m. for a fire.

When they arrived they found a gas leak in the basement.

Officials say a small explosion started the fire and crews were able to put it out. The gas leak has been secured and Nicor is investigating the leak.

No one was hurt and the area was given the all-clear.
