NIU Erases 19-Point Deficit, Beats Buffalo for MAC Championship

The Northern Illinois football team won its first MAC Championship since 2014, defeating Buffalo 30-29 in this year’s conference title game at Ford Field in Detroit.

A 29-10 deficit in the third quarter turned into a 20-point Huskies rally, starting with a Marcus Childers to DJ Brown touchdown with 17 seconds left in the third.

The fourth quarter belonged to NIU. Less than three minutes into the final frame, Childers threw his third touchdown of the game, a 32-yard offering to Spencer Tears to make it 29-24. After a Sutton Smith sack with four minutes to play, the Huskies got the ball back with a chance to take the lead and didn’t relinquish the opportunity – NIU went 70 yards in two minutes, ending with a 35-yard touchdown from Marcus Childers to DJ Brown, the starting QB’s fourth of the game.

The NIU defense held for the final minute to complete a thrilling comeback for Rod Carey’s crew in the Motor City. The Huskies are 8-5 and await their bowl destination for the postseason.
