ROCKFORD (WREX) — Don’t let the cold weather fool you—your car is still at risk of being stolen.

That’s the message from the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office. It says it sees a spike of car thefts during the winter when people start their car to warm it up, and head back inside.

The department says in order to prevent a car theft, you have to be aware of your surroundings.

“So just stay aware of all of that, aware of your surroundings,” Sheriff Gary Caruana said. “Situational awareness, along with other crimes, situational awareness is very good to do, even with your vehicle, so they’re not stolen.”

The department recommends using a remote starter if you have one.
