ROCKFORD (WREX) — The Salvation Army in Winnebago County says its noticing more people step up to be bell ringers this holiday season.
“I would say there’s at least a 35 percent increase in our bell ringing this year,” Diane Tolcher, the director of community relations and volunteer services with the Salvation Army says.
The organization says there are several reasons for that surge in more people wanting to ring the bell. One of those ways is the outreach its doing in the community.
“We’re not just asking individuals, but we find that businesses and service clubs and churches are coming forward and sometimes they’re taking a day at a time to ring our bells,” Tolcher says.
Another way is making the opportunity to volunteer more accessible online. The Salvation Army says recently its noticed more people signing up for a two hour time slot to ring their bells on its website.
“You go on, you put your location and then up comes all of our kettle sites,” Tolcher says. “You can put in the day you want, the time.”
