Freeport looks to buy properties to battle recent flooding problems

FREEPORT (WREX)- The City of Freeport could be interested in buying your home as it continues to battle recent flood problems.

The city is applying for a hazard mitigation grant program. The grant will allow the city to purchase properties in areas identified as flood zones.

If the city gets the grant, it will be able to buy properties from residents who are interested in selling their homes. Properties sold to Freeport would be demolished and turned into green space.

Machesney Park and Pearl City have previously applied for the same grant.

“Pearl City has removed 28 properties that were in the flood,” said Lowell Crow, Freeport City Manager. “We will continue to work these [grants] every year as we go forward.”

The city will hold an informative meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday December 5th at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church. That is located at 607 East Stephenson Street in Freeport.
