FREEPORT – Major Dedmond is making a seamless transition from Freeport’s football field onto the wrestling mat. He’s our newest WREX Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Rock Valley College.
Dedmond had a huge football season as the Pretzels’ quarterback, and looks to get going this wrestling season. He’s hungry for success on the mat after getting injured at state last year, leaving him with a 6th place finish after taking 3rd as a sophomore.
“I’m just looking for a state championship this year,” Dedmond said. “I’m going to take it one match at a time because one match is all that’s promised. I have a lot of drive and determination.”
Major’s dad Anthony coached him in football this year, and gets one more opportunity to coach him in the wrestling room. Anthony took 2nd in the state back in 1992 when he wrestled for the Pretzels. He relishes the chance to coach his son one more time.
“I’ve appreciated every moment I’ve had with my son,” Anthony Dedmond said. “He’s grown into a heck of a young man. He just turned 18 on Sunday. I look at that, think of where he was to where he is now. I look forward to a bright future and hopefully everything he’s worked for pays off.”
Major Dedmond has put in the work. Now he’s primed to show just what a hard worker can accomplish, no matter if it’s the fall or winter sports season.
