CHAMPAIGN (WREX) — The Forreston Cardinals take home their third state title in 5 years after defeating Camp Point Central, 44-6, in Friday’s 1-A state championship game.

Forreston raced out to a 30-0 halftime lead, anchored by two Evan Kelsey touchdown runs, and a Hunter Rogers pick-six to emphatically pull away before the break.

The Cardinals outgained the Panthers 404-226 in total offense, with every Forreston yard coming via rush. Kelsey lead the way with 148 rushing yards on 17 carries, with Garett Badertscher adding 96 yards on 16 carries.

Hunter Rogers paced the Forreston defense with 10 total tackles, adding a tackle for loss, two pass breakups and his interception return touchdown.

Forreston, the 2014 and 2016 1A state champions, are now on the even-year track – this year’s title gives the NUIC a total of 20 football state championships across all classes.
