The Byron football team is one win away from the program’s second state championship as the Tigers set their sights on Champaign this week.
13 WREX Athlete of the Week Zak Alberts has emerged as a two-way threat for the Tigers over the years, making big plays on defense and offense – most recently, a two-touchdown performance in the 3A semifinal at Herscher.
“Zak has been a great defensive player all year long, he’s a borderline all-state kid in my opinion,” head coach Jeff Boyer says. “Offensively, he’s starting to contribute quite a bit. He had a bit of a shoulder injury at the beginning of the year, now he’s all healed up from that, we have him going on both sides of the ball.”
It’s a hungry Tigers team, especially after last year’s 7-0 semifinal defeat that kept Byron out of state. Now they’re on the big stage this year, bringing a 13-0 record to Memorial Stadium at the University of Illinois.
“Means the world to me,” Alberts said of this season to date. “Especially doing it with friends I’ve grown up playing with, it’s incredible. Having Coach (Jeff) Boyer and Coach (Sean) Considine, they won the last championship, and they’re coaching with us. It’s the best feeling ever.”
Byron and Monticello kick off at 4:00 on Friday in the 3-A state championship game.
