WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WREX) — While the race for the 17th Circuit judge has not officially been called, the county is still moving forward with plans to replace sitting Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato in the case he wins that election against Donna Honzel.
The decision is in county board Chairman Frank Haney’s hands. State law says he must appoint a Democrat because Bruscato is a Democrat. State law also says the person must be a licensed attorney and the appointment must happen by Dec. 3.
Haney says he’s looking for someone who can collaborate.
“The public safety continuum is multiple important offices, law enforcement, public defender, state’s attorney as well as the courts,” Haney says. “It’s very dynamic. And having people who want to work in partnership to make sure we’re doing this the best way possible, and it will have an impact on our community.”
Haney says there will not be a condition that the interim not seek election in 2 years, which was the case when Haney had to pick an interim clerk.
Public interviews will be held next Thursday and possibly Friday. A notice to fill the vacancy will be posted on the county board’s agenda by 5 p.m. Nov. 16 for the Nov. 20 county board meeting.
