Police union cuts ties with lawyer for convicted ex-officer

CHICAGO (AP) — The Fraternal Order of Police in Chicago says it will no longer refer officers in need of legal assistance to the attorney who represents convicted former officer Jason Van Dyke .

Daniel Herbert is a former Chicago police officer and prosecutor who once worked as an FOP staff attorney. He built his private practice largely on representing police officers in labor disputes, civil and criminal cases. Officers can hire Herbert, with FOP financial support when warranted.

Herbert said Wednesday he appeared a day earlier before members of the board, which expressed displeasure with his handling of Van Dyke’s case.

Van Dyke was convicted of second-degree murder and aggravated assault in the 2014 shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.

Herbert on Monday filed a motion seeking to move to January a hearing on motions to throw out the guilty verdict or grant Van Dyke a new trial .
