United Way kicks off ‘Success By 6’ reading program

ROCKFORD (WREX) – The United Way’s “Success By 6” reading program kicked off on Wednesday with a special guest reader.

Hanadie Hayes, 6, of Rockford, stopped by the YMCA’s Children Learning Center to read her book, “Hanadie and Teddy’s First Day of School,” to pre-k students. Hayes released the book last year.

“I like to read, but I never made a book of my own…so I decided to write one,” Hayes said when asked about why she wrote the book.

The United Way’s school readiness program began in 2011 and helps parents and early learning educators ensure children, from birth to age 6, are prepared to enter kindergarten ready to learn. The United Way also wants to show the sky is the limit for young kids.

“You can do great things at a young age. Whether it’s writing a book, or some other achievement. I don’t think age is a limitation on meeting your goals and doing things that are sometimes unexpected,” Paul Nolley, the United Way Community Impact Manager said.

Each student in the program will receive six books to keep.
