CHICAGO (WREX) — Regional Emmy nominations were announced Monday by the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
13 WREX received three nominations in three different categories. The first was for Evening Newscast, which featured breaking news coverage surrounding Leilani Hillis, the former employee of the Rockford Area Economic Development Council, who was being investigated for embezzling more than $500,000 over the course of a decade.
The second nomination was for Societal Concerns Report, for 13 WREX’s comprehensive news series on the opioid epidemic in Northern Illinois. The coverage including nearly 20 stories, a 20-minute documentary and a live town hall event last November.
And finally, the third nomination was for Environmental Report, for Kristin Crowley’s investigation into the lasting health impacts on Rockford’s Southeast Superfund site. Kristin’s story featured a man, George Davis, who passed away from cancer after living the vast majority of his life in the contaminated Superfund site.
“I could not be more proud of the 13 WREX team for producing such important, consequential reports for our viewers,” said 13 WREX News Director. “Not only is the work important, but our team does such an amazing job with quality storytelling.”
The 60th Annual Chicago Midwest Emmy Awards Gala will be held Saturday, Nov. 10 in downtown Chicago.
