School: “Every student kept safe” during evacuation after false alarm

ROCKFORD (WREX) – Berean Baptist Christian School said it’s thankful for the swift response from staff and local law enforcement after reports of a gun lead to an evacuation Tuesday at the school.

“Things become real,” Berean School Business Manager John Stalions said.  And we’re thankful it was a false alarm but also thankful for the guidance of our police department, law enforcement they’ve helped us even in times past with preparedness and what we’re supposed to do.”

The school went on lockdown moments after a gun was reported at the school, according to Stalions. When law enforcement arrived, officers ordered students to evacuate the school’s 200 students.

“We have a system within our school with how to notify staff right away,” Stalions said. “Every student was kept safe until police directed us otherwise.”

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office found the report was a false alarm and a person walked in with an umbrella.

“We felt that we were well equipped to keep ourselves safe at the time,” Stalions said.

Berean Baptist Christian School serves children in preschool to 12th grade.
