ROCKFORD – Rockford Christian senior runner Riley Wells is our new WREX Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Rock Valley College. Wells is one of the most decorated runners in the area, winning state titles during track season, and finishing in the top ten in the state in the past two cross country seasons.
“Riley is a once-in-a-career talent, for sure,” Rockford Christian head cross country coach Randy Moore said.
Wells says it takes a special kind of athlete to push through the difficulties that come with distance running.
“Running everyday honestly isn’t fun,” Wells said. “It’s not for everyone. I’m blessed with four or five seniors that I’ve run with since sixth grade that got me through it and made practice really fun.”
Wells has a special gear that he finds late in races that helps push him to victory. He calls it his kick.
“I don’t know where it comes from,” Wells said. “I think I really want to win. So I sit on people and I kick, and then I hope for the best at that point.”
He’s shown the ability to be the best in the state during track season. This year he hopes to add cross country state champion to his growing resume.
