Mild and pleasant Thursday ahead

ROCKFORD (WREX) – Another gorgeous afternoon is in store for the Stateline Thursday.

A far cry from Wednesday morning’s wet start, this morning has been mostly clear and crisp.  Overnight low temperatures managed to dip into the low-to-mid-50’s thanks to clear skies and a calm wind.  There are areas of patchy dense fog.  Stephenson County has had issues with dense fog at times.  While patchy fog can be expected before 9 AM, it has been most dense near Freeport.  This has to do with the temperature outside and the dew point temperature.  The dew point temperature and the air temperature in Freeport have been the same now for about two hours, meaning that the air is saturated with water vapor (tiny water droplets) and in response to this, dense fog has formed.  By 9 AM, this should have burned off and even our friends in Stephenson County will see the beautiful sunshine.

A large area of high-pressure has settled in and that will keep our weather dry for the time being.  Outside of a few fair weather cumulus clouds possible this afternoon, there is very little in the weather department to keep you from getting outdoors this afternoon.  High temperatures will rise into the upper-70’s and a few spots, especially south of Rockford, might get to 80-degrees.  Winds are out of the southeast today as the area of high-pressure slips to the east of the area.

The nice weather will not last forever.  By Friday, clouds will start to build ahead of the next rain maker.  While Fri-yay appears to remain mostly dry, there is a chance for showers possible by the afternoon hours.  The biggest rain and thunderstorm threat arrives late-Friday into early-Saturday morning, bringing with it the potential for very heavy rainfall.  The severe weather threat at this time appears low, but it will be something to monitor.  The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has the area under a small threat for severe thunderstorms (“marginal” risk, or a 1 on a 1-to-5 scale) Saturday.
