Hurricane Chris churns in the Atlantic, Beryl could redevelop

Atmospheric conditions could help the regeneration of Beryl late this week.

As of the 11 AM EDT Advisory from the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Chris continues to accelerate to the northeast. Chris is the second hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Maximum sustained winds Wednesday morning are 100 mph with storm motion of 22 mph to the NE. The center of this storm has become more defined in the past day, but will remain well off the coast of the US. Currently, Chris is 440 miles ENE of Cape Hatteras, NC. The current forecast track has the center of Chris passing near Newfoundland on Thursday. Atlantic Canada should monitor Chris in the coming days. Life-threatening surf and rip current conditions remain possible along the Mid-Atlantic Coast of the US.

South of Hurricane Chris, a large area of disorganized thunderstorms associated with the remnants of Beryl is located over the Bahamas. Conditions could be conducive for redevelopment later this week. To recap, Beryl formed in the central tropical Atlantic on July 5. The system intensified into a Category 1 hurricane on July 6. Wind shear and dry air caused Beryl to fall apart last weekend and the National Hurricane Center issued its final advisory on Sunday. The remnants of this storm then brought heavy rainfall to the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Atmospheric conditions could become somewhat more favorable for Beryl to regenerate as it moves north into the western Atlantic. Even if this were to happen, it would likely track out to sea and away from the US.
