Illinois Women’s Am wraps up at Aldeen

Sabrina Bonanno carded the best score in the stroke play portion of the Illinois Women’s Amateur Championship Monday, and she finished strong Thursday as well. Bonanno knocked off defending champion Kelly Sterling, 4 and 3, to win the 2018 title at Aldeen Golf Club.

Bonanno, a former Little Rock golfer from Norridge, had a 5-hole lead after 10 holes. But Sterling, who beat Freeport’s Maxine Nesemeier and former Harlem standout Carson Racich on the first day, won back-to-back holes to pull within three. But Bonanno hit a key par putt on 14 to go 4-up, before closing out the match on 15.

In the First Flight championship match, Boylan grad Jesse Slattery battled Margaret Hickey of Glencoe. Hickey won the match 1-up in 18 holes. Slattery won holes 11 and 12 to go 2-up in the match after being all square through ten. But Hickey came on strong, hitting a birdie on 16 to give her the lead, which she maintained over the final two holes.
