Winnebago Co. Deputy pinned between cars during a traffic stop

Officials say a Winnebago County Deputy was pinned between two vehicles Wednesday night while he was conducting a traffic stop.

Authorities say it happened around 10:45 Wednesday night on North 2nd Street and Melbourne Avenue in Machesney Park. Winnebago County Deputy Frank Ventre was handling a traffic crash in the area.

After the crash, Ventre attempted to aid another driver who was having mechanical trouble in the same location. That vehicle was being jumped by another vehicle and Deputy Ventre was standing in between the two vehicles.

At that time, a motorcycle headed southbound lost control and crashed in to the rear of one of the vehicles being attended to by Deputy Ventre, pinning him in between the two vehicles. Ventre was taken to the hospital where he was later released with minor injuries.

Daniel Jenkins, 54, was driving the motorcycle and taken to the hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. Jenkins was charged for Reckless Driving and Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department wants to remind drivers of the Scott’s Law, or the "Move Over Law," which requires motorists to yield to moving emergency vehicles, including highway maintenance vehicles, displaying oscillating, rotating, or flashing lights.

Scott’s Law also requires a driver to change lanes (if safe to do so) or reduce speed and proceed with caution when approaching a stationary emergency vehicle displaying flashing warning lights.
