Rock Valley Blood Center in desperate need of blood donations

The Rock River Valley Blood Center is in desperate need of blood donations.

The blood center says after weeks of bad car crashes and shootings, the blood supply at the center is dangerously low.

Experts say they are especially in need of certain blood types. The center has less than a one day supply of A-negative and B-negative blood and less than a two day supply of O-negative blood. That means if there’s another serious car wreck in Rockford, patients may not get the blood they need to survive.

"We’ve had a few incidents in the past few weeks that have nearly depleted us of a single type for a single patient," Jennifer Bowman, the marketing manager for the Rock Valley Blood Center says.  "Unfortunately only 18 percent of the U.S. Population has negative type blood and we’re very very low on negative type blood."

You can donate if you’re at least 17 years old or 16 with a parent. People in general good health are asked to donate. If you take medications you’re not disqualified to give blood.
