Rock Valley College had a successful Saturday on both the softball and baseball diamonds.
Both RVC squads earned postseason victories with home field advantage as the softball team won the Region IV tournament to advance to nationals, while the baseball team swept a doubleheader to advance to the second weekend of the Region IV tournament.
The Lady Golden Eagles’ pursuit of a fifth straight national title did not get off to a good start, falling into a 4-0 first inning deficit. Stillman Valley’s Courtney Fernette crushed a three-run homer and Orangeville’s Morgan Robb added an RBI base knock in the bottom of the inning to immediately tie the game.
After Joliet took a 5-4 lead in the 2nd, RVC had another huge inning, thanks to another Fernette home run, a two-run blast. The Lady Golden Eagles won a 10-7 slugfest to wrap up another Region IV crown and qualify for nationals.
Chad Herren’s Golden Eagles baseball team beat DuPage 8-7 in the first game of the best-of-three, and then got a complete game gem from Dakota’s Cade Meier in Game 2. A four-run seventh inning powered RVC to a 7-3 victory to earn a spot in the Region IV baseball tournament’s second weekend.
