After nearly five hours on the ice, the Icehogs are moving on to the second round of the Calder Cup playoffs.
The Rockford Icehogs complete the sweep of the Chicago Wolves with a 4-3 triple overtime win Thursday night.
The marathon game came to an end with a goal from forward Victor Ejdsell three minutes in to the third overtime.
The golden goal was Ejdsell’s second of the game after giving Rockford a 3-2 lead back in the second period.
Ejdsell joins Cody Franson and Chris DiDomenico as scorers on the night.
The game lasted 4 hours and 59 minutes, finishing as the eighth longest game in AHL history and the longest in Rockford’s 11 years as an AHL franchise.
Beating Chicago gives the Icehogs just their second series sweep in franchise history after taking down the Texas Stars in the first round of the 2015 playoffs.
Rockford now awaits the winner of the Grand Rapids/Manitoba match up for their second round opponent. That series will end after a deciding game 5 on Monday, April 30.
The Icehogs will host game 3 of their second round series on Wednesday, May 9 at 7 pm at the BMO Harris Bank Center.
