FREEPORT (WREX) — 9 East Coffee has been brewing up more than just espresso over the past 15 years in downtown Freeport, it has become a place for people to connect.

For owner Brian Nissen, pouring coffee and talking with customers is his favorite part of his daily routine running the shop.

"Its been fun to engage with people despite everything that is going on," says Nissen.

The coffee shop has been a Freeport staple since opening in 2005, but Nissen is new to the business. In 2019, him and his wife purchased the business from the original owners and began what become quite the adventure.

"It was quite crazy learning how to run a good business and then we had Covid," says Nissen, "but everything is going well and we're rolling with the punches. Its still a lot of fun."

Through the ups and downs that Covid-19 brought, 9 East has succeeded.

Nissen says loyal customers, like Matt Fogarty, are the reason the shop has become what it is today.

"There's a really nice group of people that hang out here most mornings," says Fogarty, "and I love espresso coffee, I enjoy the comradery."

The brick and wood interior, books available for purchase, and of course the coffee, tea and food create a cozy environment. Nissen says 9 East has a community feel where people can hangout and chat.

"Its defiantly not a Starbucks, where it is sterile and cold," he says, "we try to keep it warm."

Creating an inviting space that Fogarty says it the perfect place to sit down, chat and enjoy your cup of joe.

"This place just has a nice small town family atmosphere," says Fogarty. "You get to kind of feel the local culture and the people if you come to a more mom and pop style business."

9 East Coffee is located at 9 East Stephenson Street in Freeport and it is open from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
