ROCKFORD (WREX) — Violent crime remains a problem in Rockford.
According to the City of Rockford, year-to-date violent crime numbers are up this year compared to last year.
Here's the January-August stats for violence crime:
- 2020: 1,441
- 2021: 1,518
While violent crime remains up, there was a slight decrease in violent crimes in August. According to the city, January-July numbers had violent crime up 13% in 2021 compared 2020. Through August of 2021, it's now up 5%.
However, despite the drop in violent crime as a whole in August, the Rockford Police Department opened up four separate homicide investigations during the month.
The amount of violent crime that is related to Domestic Violence also remains up, with an increase of 7.2% so far this year.

According to the city, majority of crimes are higher this year compared to last year so far. Auto thefts, shots fired calls and aggravated assaults are also up through the month of August this year compared to last year.

The city has seen a decrease in property crimes and robberies so far this year.

The number of guns recovered in Rockford through the month of August is also up, by nearly double.

The city released the numbers during a briefing Tuesday morning.
