Fall weather moves in for (only) one day

ROCKFORD (WREX) — We get a break from the summer heat, but it will be brief. Look for another stretch of hot weather, and potentially a couple 90 degree days, late this week.

Cool for now:

For the next 24 hours or so, we get another taste of fall weather. After a cool early morning in the middle 50s, Wednesday only warms into the upper 70s. This is still about 5 degrees above average, but around 10 to 15 degrees cooler than the weather we've had lately. Look for a lot of sunshine and a light northwest breeze to round out the day.

Temperatures briefly fall below 80 degrees for the middle of the week.

Temperatures fall to the low 50s Wednesday night, which will be one of the coolest nights we've had in about a week. After that, the fall weather goes away for a longer stretch as summer weather comes roaring back in.

Back in the heat:

We ease into the heat on Thursday before the hot weather really sets in. Thursday warms into the low 80s, which is slightly warmer than Wednesday. The weather remains sunny, with low humidity.

Friday brings the summer heat up even more. Highs rise to near 90 degrees, with higher humidity. This kind of muggy weather sticks around for Saturday.

We quickly get back to near (or into) the 90s this week.

By Sunday and Monday, the 90s are back in the forecast. Both days may feel like the middle 90s at times thanks to the higher humidity. Tuesday may drop slightly below 90 degrees, but that still makes it potentially 5 days in a row near or into the 90s.

The weather stays dry for the most part over this hot stretch. There is a slight chance for storms Friday evening into Friday night which bears watching. Rain is hard to come by the rest of the time, just like it was for most of the summer.

Cooler for Fall?:

After another long hot streak, we may see fall weather return just in time for the official start of the season. The Fall Equinox is next Wednesday, and a cold front may move in right on time. There is a low chance for showers and storms as the cold front moves through midweek.

Behind the front, we may cool into the middle to upper 70s Wednesday through Friday. While still slightly above average, the weather is still much cooler than the upcoming heat streak. We may not be done with the 80s just yet, but at least the fall weather begins making regular appearances.
