OREGON (WREX) — The Oregon woman accused of killing her 7-year-old son has been indicted by a Grand Jury.

The Ogle County State's Attorney's Office says a Grand Jury returned an indictment against Sarah Safranek for first degree murder and aggravated battery to a child.

Nathaniel Burton died on Feb. 17 after Oregon Police said they responded to Burton's home after a report of the boy not breathing.

According to the Ogle County State's Attorney's Office, Safranek suffocated Burton to death. Burton suffered a ruptured liver during the incident, according to court documents obtained by 13 WREX.

The entire Oregon community mourned Burton's death as a vigil was held just days after he died. The community then came together to pay for a large part of his funeral.

Oregon Elementary School unveiled a new bench in honor of Burton in April.

Safranek was arraigned in front of Hon. John C. Redington on 5 counts of first degree murder and one count of aggravated battery to a child last month. She did not enter a plea during the appearance.

Safranek's next court date is May 5 at 10:30 a.m.
