BELVIDERE (WREX) — Belvidere leaders say a new position with the police department can help drug addicts in Boone County.

The City of Belvidere City Council approved a grant that will allow the Belvidere Police department to create a position where an office will work with those who are struggling with drug addiction.

The position is part of a grant and would help those all over the county.

Newly sworn-in mayor Clinton Morris says the position can help those in his community.

"Hopefully we there will be some prevention and some cure with opioid addictions," says Morris.

The position will be taken over by a current officer and the department will hire another office to fill their empty position.
