ROCKFORD (WREX)-Two bridges in Rockford will be replaced following a recent order by the Illinois Commerce Commission to the Union Pacific Railroad line.
1st and 2nd Street Bridges were closed after failed IDOT inspections.
Rockford decided to replace 1st and 2nd Street Bridge in order to decrease speeding traffic through the historic Haight Village.
The railroad will sponsor the cost of replacing one vehicular bridge. And the Illinois Commerce Commission will provide up to 80% of cost for the pedestrian bridge.
The replacement of these bridges will reestablish a connection from the west side of Rockford to Downtown.
The construction for this project is currently underway and both bridges are expected to be completed by 2023.
