Oregon woman charged in son’s death appears in court

OREGON (WREX) — The Oregon woman accused of killing her son on Feb. 17 at their home appeared in court for the first time on Thursday.

Sarah Safranek, 34, was arraigned in front of Hon. John C. Redington on 5 counts of first degree murder and one count of aggravated battery to a child in connection to the death of her son, Nathaniel Burton. Safranek did not enter a plea.

According to the Ogle County State's Attorney's Office, Safranek suffocated Burton to death. Burton suffered a ruptured liver during the incident, according to court documents obtained by 13 WREX.

Hon. Redington set Safranek's bail at $2 million. Her next court date is May 5 at 10:30 a.m.
