Frosty weather sets up through the middle of the week

ROCKFORD (WREX) — Get used to a little chill in the air; we have slightly brisk weather for at least the middle of the week. Frosty conditions are possible for the next few nights as a result. Looking long term, we may struggle to get up above average through the end of the month.

Chilly midweek:

Wednesday looks to be the coldest day of the week as another wave of colder air comes in overnight. Look for temperatures to struggle to warm; we only get back into the upper 40's by Wednesday afternoon. With breezy northwest winds kicking in, the wind chill stays in the 30's to low 40's throughout the day. Mostly to partly cloudy weather is overhead, with a slight chance for sprinkles to round out conditions.

Keep the ice scraper handy, as frost is likely the next few nights.

Wednesday night may feature frosty conditions again. Temperatures hover just above freezing, but that is cold enough for frost at the ground level.

Thursday warms back into the 50's, but only to the levels we saw Tuesday. That means the low 50's at the warmest, with a few spots just missing the 50's.

An area of low pressure in the Atlantic keeps other weather systems from moving on. This is why the cool and quiet weather lasts for a while.

Why are we getting the cold air to linger? A traffic jam in the upper atmosphere prevents low pressure from leaving the Midwest. Since we are stuck in the traffic jam, colder air keeps flowing in the short term.

A slight warm-up:

By Friday and the weekend, temperatures warm up a little. The upper level low pressure stuck near us gets to slowly move out, allowing warmer air to move in.

Don't get your hopes up that the warmer air leads to summer-like warmth again. We may just get back to average by Friday afternoon. High temperatures just get to 60 degrees, with partly cloudy and dry weather.

As soon as the 60's are back, they go away this weekend. However, we only drop back to the upper 50's, so the weather doesn't cool that much.

We may see cooler than usual weather through the end of the month. Most of the Midwest joins us in the cooler weather pattern.

The 50's may be the theme for a while, however. The Climate Prediction Centers 14-day outlook shows cooler than usual weather through the end of the month, so we may struggle to warm up into the 60's for a while.
