ROCKFORD (WREX) — It has been nearly a year since Rockford's Family Peace Center opened its doors. To celebrate, the city gave members of local building trades unions a tour of the facility Wednesday.

The members helped renovate the Family Peace Center before it opened last July. Now, the Family Peace Center serves as a place to help survivors of domestic violence.

One of the members at the tour called the experience heartwarming.

"We do a lot of different projects," says Alan Golden, president of the Northwestern Illinois Building Trades Union, "but I don't think you do it to the level of what this is going to do. This is going to bring safety and comfort to somebody that really needs it."

According to the City of Rockford, the center has served more than 235 clients in its first seven months of operation.
