ROCKFORD (WREX) — Amazon is expanding its footprint in the Stateline.

The city announced Friday the online giant leased a 140,000-square-foot portion of the former Bon-Ton distribution center located in the 4600 block of Shepard Trail.

The news was first reported by the Rockford Register Star and was later confirmed by 13 WREX.

Roughly 200 people will work at the fulfillment center once it's up and running, according to the city.

“It is always great to see the reuse of existing buildings in our community. When that building is set to be reused by Amazon, you know we have hit a homerun!” says Mayor McNamara.

The building has been vacant since Bon-Ton filed for bankruptcy in 2018.

A Milwaukee-based investors group, Phoenix Investors, bought the building for $5 million and renovated it.

“Real estate firm Phoenix Investors did an incredible job turning this industrial building into an attractive site that is cost efficient and flexible for user. We’re excited to welcome another Amazon operation to Rockford, along with hundreds of job.”

Amazon took over operations at Pinnacle Logistics at the beginning of 2020 and opened a fulfillment center in Beloit later in the year.
