ROCKFORD (WREX) — The Illinois State football team just came up short in their first game of the season, losing 27-20 to South Dakota. The Redbirds struggled through the air as Bryce Jefferson was intercepted four times. Austin Nagel reeled in most of Jefferson's passing yards, catching five passes for 132 yards. Pha'leak Brown ran for 86 yards over 17 carries for Illinois State.

The Redbirds look to bounce back next week as they travel to Northern Iowa for week two of the season.
