OGLE COUNTY (WREX) — Dozens of acres of forestland in Ogle County will be preserved while giving families a chance to honor their loved ones.

Better Place Forest announces the creation of Illinois' first conservation Memorial Forest. The 60 acre forest will be in Oregon and families who choose cremation for their late loved ones can rest underneath a permanently protected tree native to the land.

"This is just a different way of preserving large sections of forest forever and doing it in a way that gets people there and sustains the ecosystems up and down," according to Mark Herman, Superintendent of Education at Byron Forest Preserve.

Online tours of the forest begin in April and in-person tours will be offered later this year. The first memorial ceremonies are expected to be held next year.
