(WREX) -- After months of breaking from some in his own party and moves to censure by others, Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger sees his first opponent in the GOP Primary in Illinois' 16th District.
In a campaign announcement posted to Twitter, Catalina Lauf announces she will challenge Kinzinger.
"I never thought I'd primary a fellow Republican, but is Congressman Adam Kinzinger really a republican anymore?" she asks in the video.
Lauf ran for the GOP ticket in Illinois' 14th Congressional District in 2020, she placed third in the primary and received more than 20% of the vote. Jim Oberweis won the primary in IL 14, but lost in the general election to Lauren Underwood.
"I am the daughter of LEGAL immigrants, a small business owner, & PROUDLY served in the Trump administration," Lauf tweeted Tuesday night.
Kinzinger has caught a bit of backlash lately for his vote to impeach former President Donald Trump. He was censured by his home county, LaSalle just weeks ago.
He also created a Political Action Committee and a campaign-style video to resist the party's embrace of the former president, something Lauf is clearly running on.
In her Tuesday campaign video, Lauf called the vote a "phony impeachment hoax for a president who has already left office."
The 2022 GOP primary is still more than a year away and what Illinois congressional districts look like could also change. Illinois is likely to lose a seat due to lower numbers in the 2020 Census, but it is unclear what redistricting looks like.
